For this role, we seek individuals with the following qualities:

  • Strong systems and network security awareness.
  • Extensive experience in administration of shared/multi-user Linux/Solaris servers.
  • Experience with server-hardening technologies such as SELinux, iptables, firewalls.
  • A thorough understanding of Apache/MySQL/PHP and their vulnerabilities.
  • Central log collection/auditing/response.
  • SMTP server/relay admin experience (Exim).
  • Some programming/scripting (Perl/Python/Bash/Ruby).
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills across multiple portions of complex multi-server environments.
  • Thorough understanding of network protocols and topologies.
  • Strong drive to document new security procedures and to uplift the old ones.
  • Motivation to improve security awareness with the rest of the (mt) team.
  • Able to automate security-related tasks and sufficiently document them.
  • Formal education in CS/CE (BS or MS) is welcomed, but not required.
  • CISSP and/or CISM security certification would be a major plus.

As the Security Operations Engineer you will be:

  • Responsible for the real-time security of the (mt) network.
  • Tracking emerging threats and finding root causes.
  • Identifying malicious activity within our network and tracking down and securing its source:
    • Identifying and securing compromised accounts.
    • Identifying initial vectors/web application exploits and disabling them.
    • Notifying customers of the necessary path to resolution (e.g. update passwords/application)
  • Focusing on customer site vulnerabilities, keeping customers safe from:
    • malware
    • viruses
    • spam
  • Coordinating and communicating ongoing tasks with other teams for:
    • detection
    • prevention
    • mass infection cleanup
    • security issue fixes
    • host server updates
    • customer notifications
  • Tuning the auto-ban/blackhole systems (listing and de-listing IPs, as appropriate).
  • Collaborating on a day-to-day basis with the Abuse Team.
  • Communicating and collaborating with (mt)’s other departments and security roles.
  • Be an evangelist for security best practices.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of security best practices and technologies through research and communication with various security communities/hosting companies.
